A little somethin' about me...

Vallerie Muthoni aka Brown Suga, Singer/Rapper/ Songwriter, is a Kenyan-American recording and performing artist based in Nairobi, Kenya. With roots from her childhood in the USA, her music entails a different assortment of sound. From old-school funk & groove to Hip-hop/Trap to the modern day RnB and Soul - she seamlessly experiments with these sounds to create a fusion of NuAfrican Sauce. With influences from legendary performers like Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Anderson Paak, Frank Ocean, Nina Simone and Donald Glover – Vallerie draws inspiration and often channels these musical greats.

“Debuting on the scene with an 5-track EP  'the Wavey Soul' in 2018, the singer- rapper has steadily closed ranks while gracing majors shows and sharing stages with not only prominent international acts such as Lady Leshurr (UK) & Masego (US) but some of the continent’s best as well including Burna Boy, Kwesta, Shekhinah, Blinky Bill, Muthoni Drummer Queen, Sauti Sol, Khaligraph Jones & Blinky Bill, to name a few. “Her onstage charisma and bold experimentation with different sounds has birthed a meteoric rise of a destined superstar.” (Oyaro, 2019)

 

 

Vallerie broke into the music industry early 2017 while studying for a Music Production diploma with her first single 'Sunday Afternoon'  featuring former schoolmate and friend Mbithi. The young musician’s career has only elevated since. After releasing her debut rapping single ‘No Chances’ word spread fast on this new Female MC that tripled as a rapper, singer/songwriter and after performing at Blankets and Wine Festival, an electric performer. Muthoni has solidified her name on radio and music tv shows nationwide. She has featured and been interviewed on Kenya Buzz, True Love magazine, People’s Daily and shows such as KISS100 FM,  Nation FM, the Jumpoff & Ignition (HBR), Hits Not Homework (Capital FM) & USIU Radio to name a few. The young rising star got a sterling feature on COLORS X Studios for her undeniable confidence and flow on one of her most popular tracks 'Brown Suga'. In late 2018, Vallerie was not only listed as one out of the four of  Homeboyz Radio's annual ‘Jumpoff Freshman Class of 2018’ roster but was also the only female on the list at only 17 years old.

 

On 17th August 2018, Vallerie debuted her first solid project,  ‘the Wavey Soul’  an EP that features a wide sonic spectrum and gives firsthand experience on the different sides and talents of Muthoni – from singing, rapping to spoken wotd. The EP covers topics regarding love, mental health, rape culture and the realities of a Kenyan female millennial. The first single off the EP ‘Brown Suga’ was released in April and was followed by the urban and directorial debut with the official Music Video, watch it here.

 

Her second project ‘Pisces SZN’ was released on her 18th birthday on March 14th 2019, celebrating her zodiac sign and the momentous occasion. Pisces SZN consists of 3 different but playful tracks, each with its own genre (RnB/future bass, Trap & Afrobeat) giving Vallerie the opportunity to once again show off and explore the versatility in her artistry. On August 10th 2019, Vallerie released the highly anticipated music video of one of the leading singles off the EP ‘Spicy SZN’ featuring former Camp Mulla member, Taio & singer-rapper Le Ru - watch the music video here. She premiered the music video in front of a live audience during her performance at the event ‘Hand forged in Kenya’ at The Alchemist Bar. The visuals received quite a number of great reviews and new fans raving about the catchy song and enticing visuals “Effortlessly switching in between flows, her take is a bravado expression of the burgeoning career, musical maturity and grip on her increasing versatility.” (Oyaro, 2019) The music video was followed by a successful media tour. being hosted by 3 live TV shows, 7 radio shows and a recent full spread interview on the monthly edition of the Kenya Buzz magazine.

Vallerie continues doing what she does best and remains an unpredictable yet entertaining young act to watch from the +254. Currently working on merch and new music, the East African rising star is on a mission for world domination.
